Week 2 assignment 2

Reflection on video.

Upon observing Ms. Sheila Owen and her K-2 class, I gained much insight in the art of teaching to read and write as well as the ways in which the readers and writers are respond and develop through such strategies.
Ms. Owen shared her literacy routine which comprises of 4 ways in which she guides her students along the path to becoming successful readers and writers. The 4 ways are, reading out loud where she does all the work in that she reads to the whole class using material that is a bit above their level yet sparking their interest in reading as well as useful discussions. Then we have shared reading where her involvement decreases as the students' increases. Next, there is guided reading where the students read as she helps them along the way when needed. Lastly, there is independent reading, where the students read all by themselves without Ms. Owens prompting then along. Independent reading is of course the main goal in the end.
Ms. Owens also led her class through the process of interactive as well as independent writing therefore developing and enabling her students to gradually become able readers and writers at their level. Lastly, I believe it was very important for Ms. Owen to consistently integrate the language of her ELL's to the rest of the class as I believe it develops tolerance and interest in other languages as well cultures.

  1. I really feel Ms.Owens showed a great ability to incorporate literature within her classroom. I did enjoy her scaffold learning as well. It's like learning to ride a bike. First we have training wheels then when we take them off our parents hold onto the bike then let us go when they feel confidant in us. Students may make mistakes but if they fall down, we get right back up.

  4. Mardio,
I like what you say about Ms. Owens incorporating the language of her ELL students into the class. Hearing the languages spoken by your peers can increase tolerance and awareness. I also think it can help ELL students identify with the lesson and classroom experience.

  5. Absolutely! English Language Learners (ELLs or L students) require support and attention to their unique needs. In addition to their language acquisition, teachers should bring in their cultures, backgrounds, and experiences with those of their new environment to help them achieve academic success. :D
